NASA - Aircraft
Response to Turbulence Data Collection
Problem:
Algorithms for NASA’s enhanced turbulence detection
airborne radar incorporate data based on an aircraft’s
response to turbulence. This data is not readily available
without the acquisition of expensive, complex aerodynamic
and control models.
Approach:
AeroTech developed techniques to derive the data from training
flight simulators in a quick, accurate, and cost-effective
manner.

Results:
Aircraft response functions have been collected for 8 different
aircraft types over a range of weights, airspeeds, and altitudes
using NASA’s and airlines’ simulators. This
data has been verified in flight tests and were provided
to radar manufacturers for product development.
